Melanoma can be difficult to identify because suspicious changes may occur anywhere on the skin and can develop over time. Total-body photography gives clinicians a visual record that can be used to compare skin lesions across visits.
In collaboration with Lumo Imaging, our researchers have developed LumoScanner systems that combine automated imaging, robotics, extended reality, and artificial intelligence. The systems are designed to capture standardized images of the body, create a digital representation of a patient’s skin, and help clinicians locate, characterize, and track lesions over time.
Our research investigates how these technologies can support efficient and consistent skin examinations, particularly in primary-care settings. AI-based analysis may help draw attention to lesions that warrant clinical review, while longitudinal imaging can help reveal changes that might otherwise be difficult to recognize. The goal is to support clinicians in the earlier identification and monitoring of potentially concerning lesions while preserving clinical oversight.
